The Messy Nest from Leftover Wire – neatness doesn’t count!

You already know my passion for bird nests, in jewelry that is.  We’ve all seen them neat, dressed up, messy, with all kinds of “eggs” and obviously, I’ve made too many.

I’ve seen many I loved and many I didn’t like.  My biggest peeve regarding birds nests are the excessively neat ones.  While there may be birds out there with compulsively neat tendencies and disorders, I’ve yet to see them.  For the most part, birds being the resourceful creatures they are,  I tend to think they use whatever materials they find and create nests that are more functional than tidy.

With that in mind, I noticed that I hate to discard used bits of wire that have become twisted, misshapen, somewhat ugly, scraps.  It suddenly occurred to me to use these for making yet another nest.

Soo..with twisted bits of wire of different gauges, I made this little nest.  I have to admit, it feels good to have used up that mess of wires.  Maybe next time I’ll combine different colors of wire as well, or scraps of other materials like bits of wood, pet hair, yarn, who knows!

What a great idea! Now I need to get out my box of ‘bits and pieces’!

You can never make too many nests. There is just something addictive about bird nests. I really like this one. Great idea!

Thanks Donna. I just made the tiniest nest ever as a charm for my daughters bracelet. I’ll post a photo on facebook. It’s less than 1/2″ in diameter!

Zoraida, I love seeing your bird nests evolving. Each one is so beautiful. And I’m especially interested to see what you will create using your scraps & all the other little things you come across to add to them in the coming months. You are so right…..birds are very frugal & practical and as you evolve your nests to become more “birdlike”, they will show that same natural beauty. Happy wiring!
